10/24/2005 - Zoe's Kitchen offers healthy dining options
Zoe's Kitchen is a new sandwich place located near Whole Foods Market off Corporate Boulevard specializing in chicken salad, feta cheese and being cute.
Zoe's Kitchen looks as if Ikea, the Swedish furniture haven, has branched into the restaurant business. The restaurant is decorated in lively green, red and light blue vertical stripes with plastic chairs and spinnable barstools. But even if you are colorblind, the food at Zoe's is worth checking out.
Almost every dish on the menu features feta cheese - and that's a good thing. The Grueben is a grilled turkey sandwich with feta cole slaw, which may sound odd, but is in fact delicious.
The Chicken Roll-Up is basically a chicken soft taco with feta cheese. But the salsa to dip it in is fresh and blows Taco Bell out of the water.
The food is stupendous. For around $8, you get not only a sandwich or roll-up, but also a bag of chips, a drink and a side of your choice. The fruit and pasta salad sides were exceptionally fresh - just like everything else on the menu.
The items on the menu are health-conscious except for the brownies. Maybe it is the influence of Whole Foods across the parking lot, but it is definitely getting a lot easier to be a hippie in Baton Rouge. The menu is even divided into different kinds of health-conscious issues. From those teetering on the edge of a heart attack, to those following the Zone diet plan, Zoe's is here to indulge every fad diet.
Most importantly, Zoe's offers options. From Yoo-hoo in a can to fresh-squeezed limeade, to an extensive menu of sandwiches and tasty treats, patrons are left to stare aimlessly at the menu for at least 10 to 20 minutes before placing an order.
Zoe's also has created an exhaustive line of merchandise from the obligatory hats and T-shirts, to more sophisticated baby clothes and styrofoam ice chests.
Zoe's was filled with hippies, hipsters and happy little families. Children frolicked about freely, one of which was dressed as Darth Vader. While normally this would prove to be horribly inappropriate and irritating, it's cute because it's Zoe's. Zoe's is "precious," but not to an irritating point. Even though it's filled with estrogen-loaded cuteness, it's not overly done. It's just a sweet, little place to be.
Zoe's elevates everyone to a higher level. They won't want to cuss. They won't get fat. And they will love stripes.
